What basic needs are being denied here?
Who is to blame?
Here are some case studies about different children whom are being denied certain rights. You must analyse and discuss these as a class.
(1).Tom is ten. He lives with her parents in an appartment in the city. He stays at home everyday and cooks and cleans while his parents go out. Sometimes heisfather works and brings home money but mostly, he spends his day in the pub. He comes home and eats the food Tom has prepared and then goes to bed. The next day it is something similar. His Mother spends very little time at home also. She is attending a clinic for help with her alcohol problems. Tom has no friends as he never goes out to the park to play and because he is currently not attending school.
(2). Grace is fifteen and is attending a local Catholic Secondary school. She is a Muslim. She has just received a letter sayin g that she will be expelled if she causes ant more disruption or problems in the school. Recently, she has been in trouble for organising a boycott following a Science lesson on disecting a sheeps heart and lungs when she refused to go into the class and take part. As a result, other students in the class refused to take part and there were lots of problems. Also, she has refused to take off her hijab during school hours and the school are refusing to accept this behaviour.
What rights are being granted in both cases?
What rights are being denied in both cases?
In the case of the second case study, the class will be split into two groups. One group will represent the school representatives and the other group will represent Grace. Each group has to come up with points to defend their rights.
Let the debate begin...!!!
